Six may have already met with the children around the fire but had done something which left her exiled from the group, However the children's change of attitude and willingness to allow her to stay and return to their circle to talk about their past and question her origins, leaves suspicion that Six may not have been the child they previously encountered and that this is Six's first time encountering the group of children by the fire.Realizing that the girl does not want to share her story, one of the children says that he got to the Maw thanks to the Ferryman, who saved him from the North Wind, that had previously killed his younger sister.
When they wonder how she got into the Maw, Six recalls how she wandered around an unknown city until the Shadow found her. Running away from the Chef, Six crawls into the ventilation, through which she reaches a group of children warming themselves around a fire.
